"The hidden environmental cost of Data Management"

Abstract: Data is an essential part of every product and service. Technology supports data management in all its phases, from data generation, to storage, to analytics. The current trend is “the more the better”, promoting the storage and analysis of huge amount of information with sometimes limited benefit. This has a cost in terms of environmental impact. In this lecture we will understand the technology behind data management and how this affects the global carbon footprint. We will also discuss possible solutions to mitigate this impact through a better data-centric service design.
